I've bound Button 4 to Numpad 4 so I can use the item at the lower left position in my inventory. For instance the “Staff of Preservation”, “Heal Salve” if I play Orc or “Rod Of Necromancy” with Undead. I have set Button 3 to center you directly at your headquarters, while still being able to have your units selected. I've done this to improve my amount of actions per minute, as these are usually focused on the keyboard - the mousehand needs to do more.
