Using the SteelSecurity anti-virus

SteelSecurity is updated daily to protect you from the latest threats. SteelSecurity automatically checks for updates when it is launched to ensure you are always protected. Once the updates have been loaded a little dialogue box will appear informing you of this.

If you are attacked by a virus, SteelSecurity will block it and display an alert stating "SteelSecurity stopped a virus!" with a number indicating how many seconds remain until the alert will disappear again. You can disable these alerts by selecting "Anti-virus" and clicking the "Protection" tab. Here you de-select the function: "Show warning when a virus is found".

SteelSecurity Anti-virus automatically scans:

  • All the e-mails you receive
  • All the files you download from the internet
  • All the files you access on your computer

It is important to regularly perform a full system scan of your PC. Before doing this you should close as many applications as possible. Press the Anti-virus button in the Steel Security Main Menu. Press the "Scan" tab and select "My Computer" followed by pressing the big "Scan now" button. Steel Security will now perform a full system scan.

You can ensure that these scans are performed regularly by using the "Schedule" function.

Using the SteelSecurity game-mode

SteelSecurity application automatically transitions into "game-mode" each time you launch a supported game, by activating the appropriate game profile. In game-mode SteelSecurity uses only minimal system resources to allow you to focus completely on the game. A game profile is a collection of anti-virus, firewall and general settings. By default, the game profiles are designed to minimize system resource usage while still maintaining a responsible level of security. All game profiles can be edited to suit specific needs.

When a recognized game is launched for the first time, you are asked to confirm that this is indeed the game in question. It is recommended that you use the "Remember this answer" checkbox. If you confirm, the game-profile will be activated. The next time you launch the game, you will be asked if SteelSecurity should automatically switch to this profile. Once again, it is recommended to use the "Remember this answer" checkbox.

From then on, SteelSecurity will automatically switch to this game profile when you launch the game.

Using the SteelSecurity spamfilter

The spamfilter will rid your inbox of unsolicited mail and phishing attempts. Using it is very straightforward. As new mail arrives, it will be analysed and classified by the SteelSecurity spamfilter. Mail classified as spam will, by default, be moved to the "Deleted Items" folder.

If you still see spam in your Inbox, you can use the "This is Spam" button, which will move the mail to the "Deleted Items" folder. Conversely, if you see an e-mail in the Deleted Items folder which you do not want to be classified as spam, you can use the "This is not Spam" button, returning the mail to the Inbox.

To properly train your spamfilter, please use the Wizard button inside your e-mail client. Both Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express are supported by the SteelSecurity spamfilter.

To create a new spam folder, select "Settings" and press the "Add New Folder" button, then choose a name and a location. Mail classified as spam will now be stored in the new folder instead of in "Deleted Items".

Using the SteelSecurity online backup

Safeguarding your important documents and files on Backup Drive is extremely easy and once set up - fully automatic. Simply press the "Backup" icon in the SteelSecurity main menu and press the "+" button. Now add the folders or documents you wish to safeguard. Press the "Backup" button and your files are uploaded to your backup drive by secure transfer.

To make SteelSecurity automatically monitor and upload any changes to the folders you have chosen, simply press the "Scheduler" tab and select the desired interval and timing.

Should you run low of backup space, you can always get more by clicking "Get more space". Your backup drive can be accessed from any computer connected to the Internet. Simply use your username and password to log in at this site.

Using the SteelSecurity firewall

When an application tries to access the Internet you will be notified. If the application is known and trusted by SteelSecurity, it will automatically be allowed. Advanced users can of course always change this setting, if they feel the need.

When you are notified about a new application trying to access the Internet, you can allow or deny access - and you are presented with the following checkboxes:

  • Send the program to SteelSecurity for analysis
  • Remember my answer and don't ask again

Assuming that you trust the application that is trying to get online, it is recommended that you use the "Remember this answer" checkbox. The next time you launch the application, SteelSecurity will remember your settings. Should you wish to change a firewall permission, you can do this by using the "Firewall" button in SteelSecurity.
